The summer tennis season is in full swing at Wolverhampton Lawn Tennis and Squash Club, but the opportunity to play sport and get healthy is not the only feature of the popular Newbridge-based venue.

There is a strong camaraderie and community spirit amongst members, which also manifests itself in a thriving social programme and many different initiatives for charity.

WLTSC recently fielded the largest team in the annual Aberdovey Bike Ride, raising funds for the Critical Care Unit and the Giles Trust at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital in memory of former member Robert Marshall, and in thanks for the care received by19-year-old Ryan Hughes.

Ryan, nephew of Operations Manager Marc Hughes, has undergone treatment for a brain tumour but is now recovering and was delighted to join the WLTSC team for this year’s event.

With Aberdovey done and dusted, attentions quickly turned to the third Lord Bilston Challenge, orchestrated by Personal Trainer Brendon Turner, in memory of his late father Dennis, former MP, Leader of Wolverhampton Council and member of the House of Lords.

For the third time since Dennis passed away in 2014, Brendon is leading a team in an adventurous challenge to raise money for Compton Care, which this year includes carrying a member of the charity’s staff across land and water via a tandem, a stretcher and a canoe –  without their feet touching the floor!

Back on court the Club and Vintage Tennis Championships have been staged in recent weeks, with the Great British Tennis Weekend and County Championships still to come this summer.

Exciting times, and shortly you could join the fun and benefit from an extra three months’ membership.

Anyone paying a year’s subscription in full will get 15 months for the price of 12 when joining between now and August 31*

So why not come along and give us a try?
